The Torquay Garden House

The customised copper cladding, timber and brick facade of the Garden House, Torquay. Over time, the copper will naturally change in colour to green. This visually dynamic process occurs in response to the natural elements, preserving the metal underneath.

Located in the heart of the Surf Coast, Torquay is a vibrant Victorian coastal town and the perfect location for this Garden House project by Lifespaces Group.

The Garden House is from the Auhaus Release by renowned Melbourne studio Auhaus Architecture. Its distinct facade of copper, brick and timber brings a dynamic, modern aesthetic to its coastal streetscape.

This design is a great blend of artistry and practicality. The clever use of space is remarkable—every detail has been so carefully considered by the team at Auhaus. We’re really proud to bring it to life.

Design Details

The single-storey design is laid out in a classic courtyard arrangement. Living spaces are oriented to capture dual garden views, opening onto both a private central courtyard and a rear deck. Surrounded by lush greenery, the design seamlessly integrates nature into everyday living.

Inside, the home embraces a refined simplicity. Spacious living areas are complemented by soaring 3.1m feature ceilings and an open-plan layout. Lofty ceilings in the main corridor and rear living/dining spaces amplify the sense of openness and provide a seamless flow to the outdoors. The bedrooms, located at the front of the house, create distinct zones for living and sleeping, while the light-filled master bedroom enjoys a leafy outlook across the internal courtyard.

The kitchen features statement green cabinetry, while textured tiles add a tactile layer to the minimalist design. Hardwood timber floors by Hurford lend warmth and contrast against the darker tones. A palette of natural timbers and neutral walls throughout creates a soft, muted backdrop, ideal for showcasing art.

The home features premium finishes including brushed rare bronze tapware by Sussex Taps, Swiss appliances by V-Zug, tiles from Signorino Tiles  and GT&B. Benchtops by Neolith complement timber sourced from Australian Sustainable Hardwoods.

A standout feature of this particular house is the customised copper cladding facade. Over time, the copper will develop a patina, naturally changing in colour from a shiny brown to blue, and finally green. This visually dynamic process occurs in response to the natural elements, preserving the metal underneath.

Handcrafted La Paloma Grande Miro bricks from Austral Bricks impart a grounding, textural contrast to complement the copper cladding.

With its seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, the Garden House is an ideal choice for relaxed coastal living.
